Even in a snowy, cold winter, you can still run, but it’s different from running in summer, fall, and spring. In the winter, there is snow and ice, but there are still running events you can do; you just have to be careful.
Slipping is a common hazard in the winter because the roads are often icy. If it is very snowy, there are some special snowshoes for running on trails. If you don’t have running snowshoes, you can use spikes for trail running or when the road is very icy. Running in the winter can be tricky, but it is possible.
There are some running events you can do in the winter, like the Light Up The Night Fun Run by Run Vermont, which takes place in December. There is also a winter running series called Freezy Cheeks 5K, also by Run Vermont.
There are many sights like icicles on rocks, snow on trees, and if you go by a pond or lake, it might be frozen! “It’s nice to see the pretty landscape, even though it’s cold, it makes running more enjoyable!” said Ramona Hathaway, a 5th-grade winter runner.
Another difference in winter running is dealing with the colder temperature. In the winter, you might not get as hot as in the summer, spring, or fall, but if you don’t wear long sleeves or something warmer, you might get too cold.
“I think that it’s pleasant to run in the winter because you don’t get really hot,” Olivia Custer, another 5th-grade runner said.
Even though running in the winter can be cold and harder, you can still do it and have fun.
