“I was in a shock state, kind of blacked out. It was a really cool experience,” EHS junior linebacker Anthony Abrami said.
During the D1 football quarterfinals game against Burr & Burton at Essex, Abrami blocked a field goal with a tied game of 7-7 and only 20 seconds left on the clock, causing the game to go into overtime. This play led to Abrami earning NBC5 Championship Play of the Week.
Abrami was born with a discoid meniscus, which, over time, began to tear. After his six-month recovery from his surgery in March, Abrami was injured again for the season. His return was during the homecoming game.
“I felt a lot better than I had the first time, but one of my first 10 plays back, I got a sack and I just stopped thinking about it,” Abrami said.
Unfortunately, after going into overtime, Essex let up a touchdown to Burr and Burton, leading to a loss of 13-7.
“We didn’t achieve what we wanted to, which is obviously a state championship, but I’ll definitely remember this year,” Abrami said. “I made a lot of friends this year on the team, guys that I’ve played with my whole life that I got closer with. I want to win a state championship next year. We haven’t won a playoff game yet, so I want a turnaround next year.”
