Students at EHS are building business skills and community connections through a newly energized, student‑run business club.
The club meets weekly on Mondays and Fridays at 8 am. Club members enjoy getting together twice a week, and if they have a scheduling conflict one day, they can still go the other day.
The club is student-run, with students holding the positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. The students make all decisions with the oversight of the club advisor, Jennifer Desorcie, who teaches Computer and Careers, entrepreneurship, and other business-related classes. Desorcie’s main goal is to help students feel more connected to their community.
“I’m hoping that students get a sense of belonging in our community and see themselves as a member of our local business community someday,” Desorcie stated.
Desorcie explained that they want the club to make a positive impact within the EHS community, while also collaborating with the community.
“We want to get involved by helping and engaging with local businesses. We also were interested in using our business knowledge to experience competitive events, and so we have chartered with FBLA, which stands for Future Business Leaders of America, for that competitive piece of it.”
One way they plan to get involved with the community is to educate others on business and money topics.
Riley Plimpton, a sophomore at Essex High School, is the club’s secretary.
“We want to teach middle schoolers about financial literacy in the coming months,” Plimpton emailed. “A lot of kids don’t know how to handle money, so we want to teach them how to do that in their everyday life.”
The club hopes to inspire more students to explore business, leadership, and community engagement. Members of the club also encourage anyone interested in joining the club or getting more information to reach out to Mrs. Desorcie or the president of the club, Jiya Asher.
