If there is one thing that Vermont does best, it’s the season of fall. From hiking to picking apples, it’s the perfect place to enjoy autumn. With all that Vermont has to offer, it can be overwhelming to choose the right activity. Fortunately, this guide is here to help you navigate the coming months in our local Essex community.
Pick-Your-Own Apples at Chapin Orchard

Starting off, just under an eleven minute drive from Essex High School will lead you to Chapin Orchard located in Essex Town. Chapin grows over 30 different apple varieties, including Honey Crisp, McIntosh, Cortland, and Empire. Their pick-your-own season runs through Halloween and includes a short tractor ride from the parking lot to the orchard. If you’re not an apple person, don’t worry! Chapin also offers fresh cider donuts made daily and hot apple cider to keep you warm.
Get Lost at Sam Mazza’s Corn Maze

Next, venture fourteen minutes out of Essex to Sam Mazza’s Farm Market in Colchester. Their popular corn maze covers three miles and two separate paths. Each year, a new design is cut into the corn field during late-July to create the corn maze. Sam Mazza’s corn maze is open seven days a week from now until October 31st, providing the perfect mix of fun for all ages.
Hike Vermont’s Tallest Peak at Underhill State Park

Looking for something more adventurous? Drive 29 minutes from Essex High School to Underhill State Park, home of Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak. Here you’ll find access to multiple different trails including Sunset Ridge trail (moderate) and Laura Cowles trail (difficult). Following these trails will lead you to the summit of Mount Mansfield, as well as the scenic views of Northern Vermont, including Lake Champlain on a clear day. The park is open to day hikers from 8 a.m. to sunset and also offers ten campsites if you’re planning to stay overnight.
Cozy Up at the Nest

If the weather turns, head over to the Nest, a local coffeeshop and cafe. Located only two minutes from Essex High School, the Nest offers specialty coffees along with baked goods. Grab a warm coffee, and curl up with a good book or catch up on studying. The Nest provides a casual and quiet environment, perfect for rainy day work. The Nest is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends.
