Fall is a good time to chill and read a good book. EHS students have their opinions on the best books to read this fall. So here is the list of the best 8 books to read this fall.
Truly Devious Series by Maureen Johnson
This book follows Stevie Bell, a “teen detective” who loves researching crimes. Stevie goes to an elite boarding school in Vermont. At this school, students get to research and learn about the things that interest them. Throughout the book, Stevie learns about a crime that happened at the school and makes it her goal to solve the case. This story has plot twists that no one can expect.
“The murder case in the first three books is insane and has good plot twists,” one student said. “This book is good for people that like murder mysteries.”
Truly Devious is part of a five-part series. The good news is if you get hooked on this series Maureen Johnson promises at least two more books.
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
This book follows an assassin named Celaena and her adventures. Her problems start from the young age of 8 when her parents get murdered. She was found by an assassin and trained to be the greatest in the world. She faces many challenges in life like trying not to be killed in an assassin’s challenge.
“This book is very interesting and has a good mystery to it,” one student said. “It’s an engaging, quick read, and it appeals to many people’s book taste because it falls into many genres.”
Throne of Glass is the first book in an eight-book series. This book is good for people who like a strong female lead.
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson
Pip is a good girl. She is applying to good colleges and spending time with her friends and family. As a senior project, Pip decides to look into a murder that happened in town. A girl was killed by her boyfriend, and then he killed himself. While ignoring people’s concerns Pip keeps going. Someone in town wants her to stop the investigation or else…
“This book had a great mystery and the plot twists were so good,” one student stated. “Also, I loved the characters.”
If you didn’t know already, this book has become a TV show.
Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott
Stella Grant is a senior in high school and has cystic fibrosis. She starts her month in the hospital due to a flare-up in her illness. She is coping with her illness and waiting for new lungs to become available. She meets a boy named Will who is there for an experimental trial for a new drug. Stella and Will can’t be closer than 6 ft apart or they could make each other worse. Throughout this book, Stella and Will spend time together (they start to fall for each other), make sure they are doing their treatment plans, and go on adventures. This is a sort of romance and a touching story.
“This book was a book that got me interested in reading and I will always go back to it,” a source expressed. “It was a quick read, and I just loved the story.”
Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz
This book is based on the true story of Jack Gruener, a boy who survived the Holocaust. This story follows a Jewish boy named Yanek who is trying to hold on to hope and survive. Yanek is taken from his home in Poland and is put through many different concentration camps. This book shows some of the real, emotional events that happened during those times.
“This book had so many emotions that you couldn’t stop turning the page,” one student said. “This book is perfect for people that like history.”
Murder in Starry Cove by Lucinda Harrison
After Poppy inherits her uncle’s old Victorian house, she moves to the small town of Starry Cove to get away from her ex-husband and all the trouble that follows that. She plans to convert the house into a bed and breakfast. Soon after she makes her plans bodies start to pile up. Somehow her new house ends up having its secrets.
“I love the characters especially the cat,” one reader said. “It was a really quick read and I just loved it.”
The Pumpkin Spice Cafe by Laurie Gilmore
This book follows Jeanie whose aunt gifted her the Pumpkin Spice Cafe. Jeanie accepts this gift to get away from her awful desk job. Lorgan a local farmer who has no interest in girls falls for Jeanie. Will her loving, happy-go-lucky personality win over the grumpy farmer?
“This book reminds me exactly of Gilmore Girls,” one student said.
Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
This book tells the story of 11-year-old Harry Potter. On his birthday he receives a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. During his time at Hogwarts, he faces many challenges and becomes a wizard. But little does he know his past makes him famous. Along the way, he makes friends and enemies.
“I love this series,” one reader said. “My favorite part is when Harry, Ron, and Hermione find the fluffy dog.”
