During homecoming week, Essex High School participates in its annual Spirit Week in anticipation of Friday’s football game. But in reality, football isn’t the only sport with important games this week.
This week, according to the school athletics calendar, there are upwards of ten varsity sporting events taking place.
Danny Murphy, a senior at Essex High School, was asked what sporting events he would be attending this week.
“Football,” Murphy said. “Because it’s the game everyone goes to and gets hyped for.”
While football may be the most highly attended and hyped up game of the week, it’s not the only team that has a game that Friday. The varsity girls’ soccer team plays just a few hours before football.
“We need more support, like a louder environment,” soccer player Olivia Smith said. “I think you should support everybody. Support girls’ soccer, support all the sports.”
The football game is so well-known by the student population that the school doesn’t need to do any sort of advertisement to increase attendance. However, other sporting events are not as well known, and a lack of advertisement in the school means almost nobody knows those games are even happening.
“I haven’t heard of them advertising any homecoming games so far this year,” senior Emma Egan said. “If anything, I’ve only heard people talking about the football game.”
Without the proper advertisement, there’s less support at sporting events. Every sport, from football to field hockey, deserves support from the student body.
“Supporting other athletes is important,” Varsity Field Hockey player Tessa Mayer said.
