After three years, Essex High School is welcoming back the Homecoming Dance. In the past month, rumors circulated the school debating whether one would finally be held again. After confirmation from a schoolwide sent email, Student Government announced that this year’s Homecoming Dance will take place on October 11th, from 7pm-10pm.
The return marks a long-awaited moment for students who have missed out on this traditional high school experience.
“My freshman year was the last time we had homecoming,” Greg Mailberger, Student Body President said. “It was a super fun event for me personally as a freshman to get more connected to the school.”
The dance will feature a “glow in the dark” theme, with decorations that are neon and fluorescent.
Unlike previous school dances such as Winterball or Prom, Homecoming will take place in the school gym.
Furthermore, attendees will not be permitted to bring other students from outside the Essex Westford School District. Emerson Marckres, junior, was planning to bring a plus one outside of the school district.
“I was just a little disappointed, but I don’t think it’s going to affect the nature of the dance too much,” Marckres said.
An additional new modification to the upcoming dance is that Student Government is partnering with Aunt Dot’s Place. Instead of paying for a ticket at the door, students are encouraged to donate three or more food drive items to receive free entry.
Student Government member and senior, Zoe Papaseraphim, helped plan the dance and food drive.
“I think it’s [food drive] a great way to help the community, and make the dance more accessible with a lower cost that’s helping others,” Papaseraphim said.
Students outside of the Student Government organization have been displaying their excitement regarding the dance. A homecoming proposals Instagram page has been created under the tag @ehs.hornet.proposals on Instagram. There are easy to follow steps on how to be featured, located in the account’s highlights.
With school spirit buzzing and preparations underway, this year’s Homecoming Dance is shaping out to be a night to remember.
“I can’t wait for this dance, it’s going to be great,” Papaseraphim said. “I recommend that everyone should go. Let’s glow together!”
