A combined performance of Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” by elementary, middle, and high school orchestras in the Essex Westford School District has gone viral on TikTok, racking up over one million views and 88 thousand likes while winning the hearts of viewers through its bold sound and collaboration.
The video was filmed during the district-wide Fine Arts Night, where students of all ages performed in an orchestral arrangement of the 1975 rock song, “Kashmir.”
The stage was filled with young musicians of all levels, playing as a team. The video gained momentum online quickly, with comments praising the students, the arrangement, and the novelty of seeing a diverse range of performers on stage together. These comments spoke highly of the emotional impact, encouraging people to “rock out” while describing the performance as being “epic” and that the experience “gave them chills.”
The performance was led by the school district’s orchestra directors, Asiat Ali and Tyson Value. Ali and Value coordinated all the various multi-age ensembles, with a clear vision for the performance and a more rigorous level of desired performance for the students.
“I think that it’s a testament to how powerful music can be,” Ali said. “Even something that is 50 years old, and in our case, when we play classical music, can be hundreds of years old, it can be so powerful.”
Ali and Value created an opportunity for students of all levels to perform together and showcase the district’s astounding music program.
This viral moment is more than just a musical success, it’s a celebration of arts education, student collaboration, and the power of music to bring people together.
