On Saturday Feb. 8, one Hornet made history deep in Rutland’s Red Raider territory.
Senior forward, Shyam Meyette, netted a goal in Essex’s 4-1 victory over Rutland, hitting the 100-point mark and becoming the first Hornet in over a decade to achieve this impressive feat.
“It’s an insane feeling,” Meyette said.
Points are earned by either scoring a goal or making an assist.
Meyette has been a marquee player for the team ever since he joined in his sophomore year and now sits amongst a handful of Hornet hockey alumni to ever hit more than 100 points.
Meyette’s role has grown each year as he now embraces the role of a first-line forward, playing alongside his sophomore brother, Roshan. Meyette leads the team in total points this year with 50 points on the season, 32 of them being goals.
The 100 point mark was no time for Meyette to relax, as the packed hockey season continues in March.
With the regular season turning toward the final stretch, every goal will be important for the Hornets. However tough rematches against Rice on Feb. 21 and BFA St. Albans on Feb. 26 remain on the schedule.
Over the course of the season, the Hornets have shown signs of just how dangerous they can be offensively, going toe to toe against elite opponents, showing off their potential to make a serious run for the coveted state title.
“I think we can make a deep run,” Meyette said, “It all depends on who we play.”
