On November 7th, the Business Standard stated, “The Republican candidate, Donald Trump has declared victory over Democratic opponent and Vice President Kamala Harris in the US Election 2024.”
This year was one of the closest and most debated election seasons. After the results were posted many people and other countries had their thoughts on the election outcome. Here is the EHS students’ view on the results:
“As a woman living in the USA I am extremely disappointed in this turnout,” freshman Claire Charbonneau. “It’s sad that they are more focused on gas prices than my rights. I’m not surprised by this result, I’m just disappointed in the people of our country.”
Junior Sam Curtiss wished for a different election outcome.
“Sadly, it’s what I expected,” Curtiss said. “I mean, the American people spoke and said that they wanted Donald Trump as their president. We live in Vermont so it’s interesting to think about it from a Democratic view, which is, it’s sad that Kamala didn’t win. We had four years of a very Democratic president, so maybe it’s time people wanted to change.”
Curtiss also thinks it’s important to consider the control of the House and Senate.
“The presidency is controlled by a Republican body, which is interesting, and I don’t personally like that, because there’s no checks and balances that are in place,” Curtiss said. “It’s just one power. So hopefully, what I’m hoping is that nothing will happen, or if something does happen, it will be positive.”
Another topic that is on students’ minds is how the future of our education system will be affected.
“I’m worried about the future of our education system and the negative effects it could have on all of us. Who knows who the new Secretary of Education will be,” said a sophomore.
Sophomore Jesse Holbrook is not as worried.
“I don’t think schools and students will be affected in a big way, there might be a little bit of indifference in what is taught,” Holbrook said.
Holbrook expected Trump’s victory.
“I thought he did more interviews, so he was more put out there,” Holbrook said. “I think gas prices are going to go down, and the economy is going to be in a better state.”
Senior Oscar Davis is a first-time voter.
“Honestly, I was pretty in disbelief,” Davis said. “I thought it was gonna be a landslide for Harris. So I was very surprised. It was just in a state like Vermont. I think it is very easy to assume that Democrats are going to win.”
