The popular and growing sport, known as pickleball, has finally made its appearance at EHS by taking its place as one of the newest clubs. The club is run by English teacher, Kate Frisbie, alongside two senior captains, Aggie Morse and Georgia Davis. The Hive was able to attend a few practices and interview some players.
Frisbie spoke about what makes the Pickleball Club so interesting.
“It’s not as hard as tennis,” Frisbie said. “You don’t have to be great at it to have fun, so that draws a lot of people. A lot of kids take it in the gym, so they’ve had some experience with it. And then there’s a ton of kids that really play. They have their own paddles, and play with their family or friends, and are really competitive.”
The Pickleball Club meets on the EHS tennis courts on Wednesdays and Sundays from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm. One of the big advantages this club has is that there is no prior knowledge or experience required, and they can supply you with all the equipment needed.
“For anyone wanting to join the club, I would want them to be super comfortable showing up to practice whenever they have the time and just trying it out,” Morse said. “We want everyone to feel excited to join and not too worried about their past experience or the rules and just have a good time playing with new people.“
Davis said she believes students benefit from the club outside of just playing the game of pickleball.
“The big thing I’ve noticed is that so many people have joined from different friend groups,” Morse said. “Everyone is meeting new people. Every time I see kids, most of them are freshmen, and I probably would have never talked to them. I just feel like it’s a club that’s bringing all four of the grades together, and it’s a good mix of boys and girls.”
Practice begins with a warm-up where you do some light passing with a partner or group. Then both senior captains will lead a small get-to-know-you exercise and fun game for the group, such as foursquare pickleball or around the world. After that, everyone breaks into pairs and plays some games. Practice ends with a tournament.
Leaders say Pickleball Club is a great way to meet new friends, get moving, and just have a genuinely good time.
